What ITAD is and why your company needs it
IT asset disposition (ITAD) is the professional management of everything that happens when a company’s technology reaches the end of its cycle: laptops being refreshed, servers idled by a cloud migration, retired network gear, offices closing or moving. A serious ITAD process answers three questions at once: what happened to the data on every device, how much value was recovered, and can the company prove the disposal met the regulations?
The informal alternative — selling the lot to the highest bidder, donating without control, or letting it sit in storage for years — leaves those three questions unanswered. Each one has a cost: an unsanitized drive is a breach waiting to happen, a badly sold lot is money left on the table, and an undocumented disposal is a finding waiting for the next audit.
ITAD is not (just) recycling
Electronics recycling is the final destination for equipment with no useful life left; ITAD is the management layer that comes first and decides, asset by asset, the best path: data first (nothing leaves without certified erasure or destruction), value second (a three-year-old laptop or a current server is not trash — it is appraised and resold), recycling last (only what is truly end-of-life is processed as waste, under NOM-161, with documentation). That hierarchy is the difference between "getting rid of equipment" and managing it.

How is ITAD different from just recycling the equipment?
